Dieting: The Foundations Matter


I posted this on social media last week and thought it was a perfect blog to pop on my website. It's short but I think it gets my point across.

I come out with some really weird and wonderful analogies with my clients but today I think I surpassed myself. Dieting is like building a house!🤣 Here's my explanation as to why......

I've been watching out of my kitchen window as a new housing estate is being built. They seemed to be at it for ages without any visual progress. Loads of folk doing loads of work but nothing to show for it. Then all of a sudden houses appeared. What I then realised is that the builders were initially working on the foundations. Without solid foundations the houses wouldn't last very long and they'd be back to square one!

Dieting is no different. Initially we need to make lifestyle and mindset changes that act like the foundations of a house. Although this process can be frustrating, as let's face it we all want instant gratification, it's essential for long term results. How many times have you started some fad diet, lost 6lb in the first week, then ended up weighing more a few months later when your diet broke down? That's because the quick fix doesn't work and it never will. Spend time at the start building the foundations in your lifestyle and daily habits/routine that will help solidify your long term progress. Focus on the daily habits and the weight WILL come off. But don't allow the scales to measure your success. Your actions are your measure of success. Ask yourself where you want to be in 6 months time. Back at square one or 6 months into a successful and stable journey with the confidence that you'll have made further progress in another 6 months time?
